PATTAYA, Thailand (AP)—Fourteen years after she last made the final in the event, Thailand’s Tamarine Tanasugarn progressed to the final of the Pattaya Open with an easy win over Sesil Karatantcheva on Saturday.
Tamarine, 32, won 6-2, 6-0 to match her 1996 effort in making the final of her home tournament.
She will meet top-seeded Vera Zvonareva of Russia, who took 2 hours, 12 minutes to put away Kazakhstan’s Yaroslava Shvedova 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 later Saturday.
The Russian, looking for her 10th title, played a more consistent game to take the first set in just 34 minutes. But the 48th ranked Shvedova recovered in the second and intensified her attack.
In the third set, Shvedova had a chance to break from the start but the Russian got off the hook with a huge serve. She went on to break the next game and gain the upper-hand at 2-0, enough for her to win the match.
“I never played Tammy on hard court. I played her at Wimbledon. She played great tennis. Tomorrow is going to be tough,” Zvonareva said.
In the earlier match, Tamarine produced a double break to go up 3-0 and later extended the lead to 5-2 with her superior baseline game before taking the first set in 30 minutes.
Tamarine carried the momentum into the second set, breaking the Kazakh immediately before holding in a second game that lasted 13 minutes. The 6-0 scoreline in the second set disguised the fact she had to save several break points.
“It was tough for me because I have had a fever since last night. There were several games that went to a lot of deuces. But I was very pleased,” Tamarine said. “No matter what happens in the final, it’s a bonus for me.”
Karantancheva, formerly of Bulgaria, was playing in her first tour semifinal for five years.
