JOHANNESBURG (AP)—Slovenia’s Blaz Kavcic beat the more experienced Thierry Ascione of France 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 on a rain-soaked first day of the SA Tennis Open on Monday.
Meanwhile, France’s Stephane Robert lost the first set to American Brendan Evans, but triumphed 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Filip Prpic of Sweden beat Austria’s Andreas Haider-Maurer 6-1, 6-3. Fritz Wolmarans from South Africa came from a set down to beat France’s Edouard Roger-Vasselin 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. Wolmarans fired down 17 aces in the match.
Monaco’s Benjamin Balleret had a 6-4, 7-5 win over Switzerland’s Alexander Sadecky and Israel’s Noam Okun defeated another Swiss, Roman Valent, 6-3, 7-5.
“My confidence hasn’t been the greatest and with the rain delays it was 10 hours from start to finish in our match,” Okun said. “So to finally close out the match was not only a relief but a confidence-booster.”
The top two seeds, 12th-ranked Gael Monfils of France and Spain’s David Ferrer play Tuesday. Monfils meets Dominik Hrbaty of Slovakia, and Ferrer faces another Slovakian, Karol Beck.
